The Coastal Flysch Route
A unique natural wonder can be seen in the sea cliffs of Gipuzkoa, located in the Basque Country. Here, wave erosion has revealed millions of years of geological history written in superimposed layers of rock. These fancifully layered deposits are known as flysch, and add special character to this part of the coast, declared a Protected Biotope. The hundreds of layers of flysch were laid down continuously here for nearly 60 million years (between 110 and 50 million years ago), providing us with a geological imprint of the Earth?s history through major events and cataclysms. Visiting this part of the coast is a fascinating adventure back in time.
The beauty of the coast
The towns of Mutriku, Deba and Zumaia are the ports of call for exploring this natural paradise. Visitors are invited to enjoy the scenery either by boat or by joining a guide on one the many walking tours. And to round out the experience, two interpretation centres, Algorri in Zumaia and Nautilus in Mutriku, will provide you with all the information you need to discover the secrets of this coast.
