Visit the Flysch
Different types and lengths of guided tours are available year round to explore the most spectacular spots and satisfy everyone?s curiosity.
Discover flysch by boat
A fascinating excursion by sea will allow visitors a close-up view of the coastal sea cliffs and the impressive outcrop of flysch from Deba to Zumaia, or the different but equally spectacular black flysch deposits at the so-called Seven Beaches of Mutriku. Various combinations of routes by sea and on foot provide a number of ways to explore the area.
Discover flysch on foot
A wide network of coastal footpaths connects the towns of Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku. To see the best of the area on foot, we highly recommend one of the excursions or guided tours, such as the Deba-Zumaia coastal trek. A guide will accompany visitors through more than 50 million years of geological, natural and human history.
Nautilus - Geological interpretation Centre of Mutriku
The cliffs at Mutriku are made up of layers of black flysch embedded with a vast amount of fossils dating back more than 100 million years. After many years of work experts have brought together a significant collection of samples which are now on display at the Nautilus. The interpretation centre also explains how flysch was formed on the seabed 110 years ago and what marine life was like at the time when today's Basque coast was totally underwater.
